After treating her mother for chronic low back pain, she decided to tackle her own long-standing back pain that had prevented her from participating in long walks, car travel, or heavy activities. She underwent back surgery about 6 years ago, with return of her pain on and off since then.
Examination
With careful evaluation, I was able to classify her back pain as an “Extension Responder” and immediately give her an exercise to work on to reduce her pain. We had to play around for a visit to perfect our approach, but she found that by performing her single home exercise, she was able to reduce her pain significantly at the time she performed it.
Treatment
Over the next few visits, we started a spinal stabilization program, then progressed her extension program to fully restore her ability to move, lift, and perform her regular exercises at the gym and spend more time behind the wheel shuttling her kids to activities.
